Pawtucket Bridge

Pawtucket, RI

Project Description

RIDOT is currently replacing the Pawtucket River Bridge, which carries I-95 over the Seekonk River in Pawtucket. The existing bridge steel plate girder bridge is a source of major frustration for truck traffic as it is currently posted at 18 tons due to heavy deterioration, forcing the use of long detours which take them off of the interstate. The main bridge is being replaced in three phases with a steel open-spandrel arch deck structure which spans 350'.

Construction Method and Specifications

McB and the Contractor developed an innovative arch "roll-in" scheme for Phase 2 & Phase 3 construction. Arches were assembled on a slide track to the south in an area of good access that did not interfere with traffic. Completed arches were then rolled laterally to the north, and jacked up vertically into final position.
