Rumson – Sea Bright Bridge Replacement

Project Description

The project replaces the existing movable, double leaf bascule bridge built in 1950, which carries Rumson Road (County Road 520) over the Shrewsbury River. The new structure with also be a double leaf bascule bridge. The replacement is wider, accommodating an additional lane in the Eastbound direction as well as shoulders and sidewalks.

Our Role

MBJ provided a crane access trestle design during the early stages of the project. MBJ also provided erection plans to the steel erector, Cornell & Co., for the new bascule span. This work also included barge analyses for cranes erecting steel from barges, as well as an approach span analysis for cranes on the new approach spans. Finally, MBJ is providing a Demolition Plan for removal of the existing bridge.

Construction Method and Specifications

The new bridge has a 105’ double leaf bascule span (trunnion to trunnion) providing a 75’ clear channel width. The western approach is a 3-span plate girder superstructure composite with concrete deck. Similarly, the east approach is a 2-span plate girder superstructure composite with concrete deck. The superstructures are supported on cast-in-place concrete substructure, founded on 42” Dia driven steel pipe piles.
