US 181 Harbor Bridge

Project Description

The New Harbor Bridge will replace the existing through arch bridge that crosses the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, which serves the Port of Corpus Christi. The project will connect with SH 286 to the south and US 181 to the north. The cable stayed main span is precast segmental and will be the longest in the United States at 1661'. The north and south approaches each consist of Northbound and Southbound 21-span viaducts. Approach span lengths range from 155' to 207' and are precast span-by-span erected with a launching gantry. 207' spans also incorporate progressive cantilever erection using the launching gantry.

Our Role

McNary Bergeron is providing construction engineering services including pier head erection procedures, equipment design, launching gantry kinematic sequences and launching gantry independent check. Equipment design includes dummy frames of different shapes to support the gantry during span erection and tendon stressing. Kinematic sequences include step-by-step procedures for launching the gantry, with associated loads imposed on the permanent structure. An independent design check of the Deal launching gantry was provided.
