I-59/20 Replacement

Birmingham, AL

Project Description

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) awarded the contract for the third and final phase of the bridge replacement project for Interstate 59/20 (I-59/20) in Birmingham to Johnson Bros. Corp. The company bid $474.7 million.

The elevated portions of I-59/20 through downtown Birmingham's Central Business District (CBD) are over 40 years old and in disrepair. Current usage of I-59/20 is approximately 160,000 vehicles per day which is twice the design capacity, requiring the replacement and upgrade of the viaduct.

McNary Bergeron is providing construction engineering for Johnson Bros. and working with VSL to construct the precast segmental viaduct. The span-by-span construction will be done with falsework towers, and completed during a one-year shut down of I-59/20 through Birmingham, starting in the Fall of 2018.
