Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Replacement

Project Description

The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Project will replace the existing 68 year old structure over the Anacostia River with a new multi-arch bridge. This signature project will carry 6 lanes of traffic along South Capitol Street and ties into new traffic patterns at both approaches. The project is located within the heart of Washington DC, near Nationals Park and the Potomac River.

Our Role

McB is providing construction engineering services to the design build team. This includes superstructure erection manuals, integrated shop drawings, and temporary works designs. For substructure construction, temporary works designs included a crane access trestle, precast soffit system for river pier footing construction, and V-Pier and Abutment falsework for the concrete forms. 3D integrated shop drawings were completed for the V-piers and abutments. McB also designed falsework towers, temporary stay cables, and rigging for the superstructure erection.

Construction Method and Specifications

The continuous bridge consists of three steel arches: 540 ft. main span with 452 ft. side spans. These back-to-back-to-back arches are founded on shared post-tensioned cast-in-place concrete V-Piers and abutments.
