Project Description

The 700-foot-long Consol Energy Wingtip Bridge is a two level pedestrian suspension bridge being constructed at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. The Summit is a 10,600 acre facility that will serve as a high adventure base camp for the Boy Scouts of America and is the new permanent home of the national Scout jamboree. The bridge will cross a ravine and connect the reserve's central activity area to the camping villages and high-adventure bases on the eastern side of the tract.

Construction Method and Specifications

Access to the site with heavy equipment is limited to the areas near the abutments and piers. As a result, a temporary cable crane is required to move the steel superstructure segments into position within the span. The cable crane is supported on temporary saddles at each of the piers. A hoisting trolley lifts segments delivered near the piers and moves them into position where they are erected on the main cables. Extensive temporary works and equipment is required to stabilize the piers, install the permanent cables, install the cable crane, and erect the superstructure segments.
