PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS: THE NEW NEW YORK BRIDGE (TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE)
Construction of the $3.9 billion replacement of the aging Tappan Zee Bridge started in January 2013 and is scheduled to be completed in April 2018. The 3 mile long crossing of the Hudson River, located 25 miles North of Manhattan, consists of a signature cable stay with a main span of 1,200' and 350' plate girder approach spans with a precast deck system.
McNary Bergeron is providing construction engineering services to support the JV with complex portions of the erection. This includes development and design of the erection plan and equipment to incrementally launch the steel plate girders on the east shore. Other tasks include girder erection plans with limited crane access, temporary works design, lifting and handling equipment design for precast deck panels, and peer reviews for major temporary works plans including the underwater precast form system for footing construction.

Construction Method and Specifications
While most of the new bridge's steel-blue girder assemblies are being placed across the Hudson River with the barge-based I Lift NY super crane, the location from the Westchester landing to the first pier in the river is inaccessible to the monumental machine. An innovative yet simple alternative method is being used to install the girders in this area, as detailed in this video.
